I can't believe that place has the nerve to automatically include gratuity on a check like that. Most of that 20% is coming from extraordinarily expensive bottles of wine, which are just as easy to pour as cheap bottles of wine.

If it's stated as a general rule, and the person knows that going in, then they can't complain about it.

I agree, it's not hard to pour wine, but hey, if he can/will spend 30k on something as innocuous as wine, then he hasn't a right to complain about the tip. That's how I look at it.

A tip should be decided by the person. It's not a cost, it's a donation IMO. If he'd give $500 as a tip, I think they'd be happy too.

It's also equally easy to carry cheap and expensive plates of food.

However, I assume you've eaten at nice restaurants with your gf before. You should have noticed that there is a noticeable difference between the service there and the service at a place like TGI Fridays, so there is some correlation between the price of the meal and the service you receive.
